Grimshaw team wins competition to redesign New York’s Brooklyn Bridge
A team led by UK designer Grimshaw Architects and US engineer Silman has won the Reimagining the Brooklyn Bridge competition.
Brooklyn Bridge Forest was selected by the Van Alen Institute and New York City Council out of 200 submissions from 37 countries.
The winning entry reimagines the bridge with double-decker traffic lanes, expanded wooden walkways, a dedicated cycle path and micro-forests located at either end.
Space will also be created for pop-up markets stalls for local vendors and neighbourhood services.
Corey Johnson, New York City Council speaker, said: “Congratulations to the well-deserved winners of the Reimagining Brooklyn Bridge competition. I’m encouraged by all the bold ideas we received on how to re-envision this world-famous walkway, which has become difficult for pedestrians, cyclists, and tourists to navigate over the years.”
The Grimshaw team also included Cities4Forests and the Wildlife Conservation Society, as well as design company Pilot Projects.
