City

Brazzaville

“My city, Brazzaville, commonly known as "Brazza la Verte" (meaning “Brazzaville the Green”) for its long tradition of preserving the environment, is located in one of the most precious tropical forests in the world, the Congo Basin. This forest area plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change, producing rain for the entire African continent, and harboring irreplaceable biodiversity. However, our forests are now facing increasing pressures which increase the vulnerability of populations, including residents of the city of Brazzaville. As mayors of cities, we must mobilize to conserve our forests so that they continue to provide benefits to our people, now and in the future. That's why I have signed the Cities4Forests Call to Action on Forests and Climate.”
—Dieudonné Bantsimba, Mayor, Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo

Success Story

Brazzaville’s commitment to the preservation of its forest ecosystems is not recent. Over the past 10 years, we have combined actions to protect our forests, including the Patte d’Oie Forest Reserve, and Aware of the close link between forest destruction and unsustainable agricultural systems, we have recently undertaken a series of actions to promote environmentally friendly agricultural models. Accordingly, we are addressing some of the root causes of deforestation in our city.
