Through the Payments for Environmental Services program, Extrema has planted 1.3 million trees since its inception in 2005.
Since 2005, the municipality of Extrema in Brazil has implemented the Payments for Environmental Services (PES) Municipal Program. So far, more than 1.3 million native trees have been planted, producing billions of liters of water with the conservation of more than six thousand hectares. More than 200 contracts were signed with rural properties benefiting from the PSE. The success led the project to be expanded to other municipalities in the States of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro through the Conservador da Mantiqueira program.
The work plan — prepared with Cities4Forests assistance and executed by WRI Brazil’s technical team with the Municipal Environment Secretariat of Extrema — includes actions to support the Conservador da Mantiqueira Plan, expanding PSE programs, training and workshops. This plan also includes the implementation of pilot projects in municipalities in the Zona da Mata Mineira.
